Heavenly Visions Embraced by the Vatican
The Catholic Church has embraced the spiritual encounters of Italian visionary Pierina Gilli with the Blessed Virgin Mary, acknowledging their significance and doctrinal alignment.
In the mid-20th century, Pierina Gilli, a nurse in Montichiari, Italy, reported several encounters with the Virgin Mary, who conveyed messages emphasizing the importance of prayer, penance, and sacrifice. These apparitions, which took place in a hospital chapel and later at a miraculous spring, were marked by symbolic representations such as three roses and a heart pierced by swords. The Virgin Mary’s call for a new Marian devotion and the establishment of July 13 as a day of honor for the Mystical Rose were central to these messages.
After decades of contemplation, the Church, through a letter approved by Pope Francis, has recognized the spiritual depth of Gilli’s experiences. The letter, penned by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, assures the faithful of the apparitions’ consistency with Church teachings and highlights the spiritual guidance provided by Mary’s maternal presence.
The recognition culminated in 2019 when the site of the apparitions was declared a Diocesan Sanctuary, further solidifying its importance for the Catholic community. This official acknowledgment by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) not only honors Gilli’s profound spiritual journey but also encourages the faithful to engage with the messages of the Marian apparitions.
