DeMar DeRozan, long linked with a move to the Los Angeles Lakers, has made a surprising switch to the Sacramento Kings.
Despite the Lakers’ interest and LeBron James’s willingness to take a pay cut to secure DeRozan, the Lakers ultimately could not make the finances work after James signed a max contract. DeRozan, who grew up in Compton as a Lakers and Kobe Bryant enthusiast, has been an effective player, averaging 24.0 points in the last season with the Chicago Bulls. The Kings have acquired DeRozan on a three-year deal through a sign-and-trade that also involves Harrison Barnes moving to the San Antonio Spurs and Chris Duarte, two second-round picks, and cash going to the Bulls.
While DeRozan’s fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis was questioned due to his shooting style, the Lakers had limited options to strengthen their roster through free agency. Now, any potential upgrades will need to come via trade, as the Lakers are capped out. DeRozan’s move to the Kings intensifies the competition in the Western Conference, with the Kings adding a significant talent to their roster.
Despite the move, DeRozan has not closed the door on a future with the Lakers, maintaining his admiration for the team and leaving possibilities open for what the future holds.
