Laughter and Faith: Pope Francis to Engage with Global Comedians
In an unprecedented event, Pope Francis is set to welcome a global assembly of comedians to the Vatican, including American stars like Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon.
The gathering, scheduled for June 14 and organized by the Vatican’s cultural and communication departments, aims to bridge the gap between the Catholic Church and the world of comedy. With 105 humorists from 15 countries confirmed to attend, the event promises to be a vibrant celebration of human diversity and a testament to the universal language of laughter.
Among the international roster, Italy boasts the highest number of participants, followed by a strong representation from the United States, South America, and Europe. The event will also see the participation of Jesuit Father James Martin, known for his association with “The Colbert Report,” and Roman street artist Mauro Pallotta, famed for his “Super Pope” artwork.
This unique audience with the pope, to be held in the Apostolic Palace, follows a tradition of engaging with artists, as seen in last year’s meeting with 200 artists in the Sistine Chapel. Pope Francis, who has previously expressed his fondness for humor as a divine grace, continues to build connections with cultural figures, including a recent encounter with Italian actor Roberto Benigni.
