Former Diplomat Advocates for Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Bases
Victoria Nuland, the former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, has voiced her opinion that Ukraine should be allowed to target Russian military bases, especially those used for launching attacks or supplying troops.
During an ABC News interview, Nuland highlighted the recent Russian offensive launched from Belgorod against Kharkiv, suggesting that U.S. assistance could enable Ukraine to counter such threats more effectively. Her stance comes amidst Ukrainian leaders’ appeals in Washington for the U.S. to lift restrictions on using American-made weapons against Russian targets. They argue that U.S. arms, such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, are crucial for striking military targets within Russia.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, while expressing U.S. commitment to Ukraine’s victory, has advised focusing on reclaiming Ukrainian territory. Nuland, however, believes that Russia’s tactical advantage due to U.S. hesitancy necessitates a change in strategy, including providing Ukraine with more air defenses and artillery. She also mentioned the impact of the U.S. aid delay on the war’s progression, emphasizing the need for timely support.
